If you’re using a limited data plan or travelling, you can reduce how much mobile data your iPhone uses by adjusting a few settings.
Turn on Low Data Mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular).
- Tap Mobile Data Options.
- Turn on Low Data Mode.
- Low Data Mode helps reduce background network activity, such as automatic updates and app refresh.
Manage Background App Refresh
- Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
- Select Wi-Fi or Off to stop apps from using mobile data when they’re not active.
Restrict Data for Specific Apps
- Go to Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular).
- Scroll down to see which apps are using mobile data.
- Turn off the toggle for any app you don’t want using mobile data.
Turn Off Wi-Fi Assist
- Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to mobile data when your Wi-Fi signal is weak.
- Open Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular).
- Scroll to the bottom and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
Update Apps Using Wi-Fi Only
- Go to Settings → App Store.
- Under Mobile Data, turn off Automatic Downloads or select Wi-Fi only.
Notes
You can turn on Low Data Mode for both mobile data and Wi-Fi separately.
Limiting background data helps you stay within your plan allowance and can also improve battery life.
